1. Avoid single-use items.

Oceans all over the world are filled with plastic bottles and countless other items that were used only once, or very short term. 90% of the cost of bottled water comes from making the bottle itself! On average, people spend $1,800 on packaged water per year!  Taking a second to think twice about buying short-term items including plastic is one of the most impactful green choices to make.

2. Skip the takeout order containers.

Come prepared by bringing your own bag or container if you think you’ll be taking home leftovers. A great campaign to check out is called: Take Out Without where you can learn more! Other options are compostable containers! If the containers provided happen to be compostable, make sure to actually compost it!

3. Shop for local, organic produce.

Choosing to support local farmer’s markets are beneficial for so many reasons. One small yet significant reason being that there aren’t stickers on every item of produce. A small step to reduce your impact, and keep your body happy and healthy! Also, most markets ask for or only allow reusable bags to check out.

4. Reuse cloths

Have any old t-shirts that are too stained? Got any torn up hand-me-downs? Use them as cleaning cloths for around the house! Paper towels are a huge waste of resources so try your best to stay away from them.

5. Use glass or stainless steel straws instead of plastic ones.

Plastic straws are gowing popular for how much damage they generate. Each day more than 500,000,000 plastic straws are used in the United States. Each DAY! This discovery has sparked a huge ban on straws around the world. If 25,000 people pledge to skip the straw, it could save up to 5,000,000 straws! This would also prevent a lot of them from entering the ocean, harming wildlife.
